Sweet pineapple stands up to bitter kale in this classic combination. Make it yours trying a variation mentioned in the options below.

  • 2 kale leaves
  • 1-2 handfuls spinach
  • 1 c pineapple (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 c water
  • (Optional) Handful cashew

Directions: Rinse kale and remove and stems. Toss in a blender with other ingredients and enjoy!

Options: This is generally what people are referring to when they say green smoothie. Pineapple is generally a little too sweet for me, but it is perfect to balance out the bitterness of the raw kale. Baby kale will be a bit less bitter if you are not a kale fan. The spinach is very mild and just adds a bit more chlorophyll without changing the flavor very much. As usual, cashew will make this a creamy treat if you are used to adding dairy to your smoothies. A few variations:

Spicy vanilla –

  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Pinch cayenne

Tropical treat –

  • 1 Mango, or 1/2 c frozen mango
  • Meat of 1 Coconut, or 1/2 c frozen coconut
