Living abroad can present challenges for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including lack of available of fresh, organic sprouts and greens. This year I’ve finally jumped on the indoor gardening bandwagon and can say I wish I had started years ago. There’s nothing like preparing your morning smoothie with freshly trimmed and rinsed greens growing in your kitchen.
After a friend had great success with the wheatgrass kit, I purchased the Deluxe Microgreens Growing Kit from TrueLeafMarket.com. It came with everything you need to get started, including soil, a hydroponic growing surface, trays, seeds, a spray bottle, and instructions.
I tried both the soil and hydroponic methods and had much better success with the soil method. The hydroponic seeds sprouted first, but it was difficult to manage the right balance of moisture to keep things growing without overwatering. The soil was a little more forgiving as I figured out how much to water each day.
The kit comes with little notecards with instructions the were easy to follow. After about eight days, the sprouts—arugula, radish, mustard greens, buckwheat, peas, beets, amaranth, and cabbage—each were ready to eat.
